Katy Bowman, M.S.

Katy Bowman, M.S., is the biomechanics scientist who teaches how to reverse disease process through correct alignment and movement.

Katy is the brain and the personality behind wellness-media production corporation Well Balanced Media; founded and serves as director of the Restorative Exercise Institute; and in December 2011 published her first book for the public: Every Woman’s Guide to Foot Pain Relief: The New Science of Healthy Feet.

Katy emerged on the national health front of the U.S. in 2007 after partnering with Gaiam, Inc., to release her first series of DVDs under the Restorative Exercise heading. Building on the success of that series, her new “human body manual” is found in the Aligned and Well™ DVD series -- a complete “home pharmacy” of movement solutions specifically indicated for the country’s most common physical ailments.

Analyzing human movement (biomechanics) used to be reserved for athletes and special populations, until biomechanics scientist Katy Bowman decided to apply these same engineering principles to the every-day use of the human machine for the purpose of reducing common disease.

Katy began her career designing safe exercise programs for injured or post-rehab patients seeking to re-establish a higher level of functionality, combining her passion for physical training with her knowledge of physics and engineering.

After earning her master’s degree, she added into her purview micro-biomechanics: the physics of blood and lymphatic flow, the relationship between neurological function and cellular health, and the role of the pelvic floor muscles in supporting organ positioning and function.

Long before becoming a international health celebrity, Katy opened a small studio -- now a very large Institute and online training program. She has earned an international reputation for achieving unprecedented results in pain reduction, increased bone density, improved metabolic health and increased body awareness.

Katy’s skills as a health scientist, coupled with a unique ability to explain complex concepts using language that is clear, simple and amusing, have made her a sought-after teacher. She teaches how the body works, so any member of the public can make informed and educated decisions when it comes to their health.

Michael Curran

Michael Curran is a Restorative Exercise Specialist Master Teacher. He has been teaching Restorative Exercise since 2009.

Michael came to the Restorative Exercise after playing soccer for 25 years without a balanced stretching program had left his legs, feet and hips with asymmetrical musclular development and compromised circulation, as well as pain in the ankles and back that required frequent attention and oftentimes immobilization. He has practiced Restorative Exercise since 2007, no longer endures chronic pain, and every month moves and feels better than the month before.

In addition to Restorative Exercise, Michael is an Ayurvedic Medicine Practitioner, trained in nutrition, herbology, detoxification and meditation.

He also is certified to administer Perceptual Enrichment Program, or "PEP," a cognitive skills improvement course.

He holds a B.A. in Psychology and Communications.

Karrie Sweeney, Guest Instructor

Karrie Sweeney has been a Restorative Exercise Specialist since 2007.

Before coming to Restorative Exercise, Karrie sought out a variety of strategies to recover from the effects of mastectomies and surgical menopause, and to eliminate chronic low back and hip pain that confounded her for many years. Participating in competitive sports for most of her life contributed to some ineffective gait patterns and alignment concerns as well.  Then she met Katy Bowman.  As her pain and structural issues began to improve significantly with Restorative Exercise, she became a fast and furious convert for the tenets and applications of these powerful techniques.

Karrie’s exposure to the benefits of Restorative Exercise gave impetus to her completing training at the Restorative Exercise Institute.  She excitedly states, “Restorative Exercise improves the health and wellbeing of the whole body; at any age and any level of exercise experience.  I want to help facilitate these improvements for anyone interested in applying these techniques.”

Karrie's professional Restorative Exercise practice is in the Seattle area. She lives happily with her husband on Bainbridge Island.
